Marie Mukantabana | CLC in Rwanda

With a sincere desire to listen to the Holy Spirit and to walk together, from January 26 to 31, 2026, the Commission entrusted with the revision of the General Principles and General Norms of the Christian Life Community traveled to Spain for its second week-long in-person meeting, held in Manresa. These were days marked by prayer, fraternal encounter, and a profound exercise of communal discernment.

From the very first moments, prayer helped dispose our hearts to openness and to being touched by the voice of God, which is revealed through the words of our brothers and sisters. The Commission was able to reflect more deeply and express itself more fully on the mission entrusted to it: to produce a preliminary draft of the new text of the General Principles and General Norms of CLC.

In Manresa, as a member of the Commission coming from CLC Rwanda (replacing Jean Paul Biruru from CLC of the Democratic Republic of the Congo), I was granted the grace of making a week-long pilgrimage with my fellow members of the GP&GN Commission. It was a dream come true when I met Cecilia, who was waiting for me at Barcelona airport.

As members gradually arrived in Manresa, I became acquainted with the rest of the Commission: Marielle Mathée, CLC Netherlands; Denis Dobbelstein, CLC Belgium; Michael Liberatore, CLC Philippines; Rafael Terra, CLC Uruguay; José de Pablo, S.J., Vice World Ecclesiastical Assistant; Cecilia Martinez, member of the World ExCo and CLC Consultor from Spain; Manuel Martínez Arteaga, incoming Executive Secretary of World CLC; and Elena Yeyati, outgoing Executive Secretary of World CLC.

Mission of the Commission

During the General Assembly in Amiens, the Christian Life Community gathered to discern paths of hope in our rapidly changing world. Throughout the Assembly, the Community felt a strong confirmation of our vocation to be one community—lay, Ignatian, and apostolic—called to unity in diversity. In Amiens, the decision to appoint a commission to work on a complete revision of the General Principles and General Norms was officially approved.

In 2024, the World ExCo appointed an international commission to work with the global Community on this comprehensive review. The first draft of the new GP&GN text will be reviewed by the World ExCo and then will be sent to the national Communities for amendments. The adoption of the new text will take place at the Community’s General Assembly in 2028.

A Journey Already Underway

When I joined the Commission in 2025, it had already defined its working methods, prepared essential working documents, and set the work schedule. The Commission met regularly in virtual meetings and had already held its first week-long in-person meeting in Rome.

Walking Together

As soon as I joined the Commission, I received special guidance from Cecilia Martinez, who generously took the time to accompany and introduce me to the work. We held several one-on-one sessions so that I could become familiar with the working documents and fully follow the meetings with the other Commission members.

A Time of Communal Discernment

In the review process of the GP&GN, every community affiliated with the World Community is consulted. The first consultation took place during the second half of 2025.

The international apostolic groups established by the World ExCo (Formation, Ecology, Youth, Family), regional working groups, and experts in specific fields were also consulted.

The Holy Spirit, technology, and communal discernment proved to be effective support in this work of consultation and in organizing workshops throughout the World Community.

From Manresa: A Spirit of Gratitude and a Sense of Mission Accomplished

In Manresa, the Commission joined in the journey of hope of Saint Ignatius and successfully carried out the process as planned. The working dynamic of the two sub-groups: one focused on the General Principles and working in English, the other on the General Norms and working in French; the mutual trust; and the quality of the deliberations within the Commission were remarkable. All these elements converged toward the achievement of a meaningful and relevant text for CLC.

State of the Mission and Future Perspectives

The in-person meetings (in Rome and Manresa) were essential for drafting a preliminary text that will be submitted to the World ExCo and will be the subject of a new consultation across the entire Community.

The Commission also intends to draft an explanatory statement outlining the reasons for revising the GP&GN, addressing sensitive questions such as: being one community, the call to unity, belonging, governance, interdependence and interconnectedness within society, the Church and the Community, as well as community dynamics.
